2007-12-07 - 11:48 a.m. i started using last.fm a little while ago. this is a geeky anecdote. i became interested in it because i realized plays of my own music were being tracked on there. so i uploaded a bunch of stuff of mine on there, so people could listen to it. then i got fascinated with it, so i downloaded the little scrobbler thingy to keep track of what i was listening to and send it to the site. BUT! being a conscientious person, i told the little playlist in my itunes NOT to track when i listen to my own music ... i felt weird about being my own "fan" and falsely driving up my own plays just because, like any musician, i obsess over my songs. so none of my own music got tracked on there. so, they take stock of what you're listening to and make recommendations, kind of like netflix does, only on last.fm they build you a little playlist. now check this out ... i've been using it for a week. today i looked at my profile page on there, and guess what they had recommended me? casey holford. somehow it looked at my musical taste and figured out that i would like MY OWN MUSIC. two conclusions from this: 1) last.fm knows what the fuck they're on about.
